Credit Card for Dependent Visa Holders
Why work authorization is the fork in the road
Dependent statuses differ in whether they permit employment. L-2 and certain H-4 holders can obtain work authorization and, with it, an SSN. F-2 dependents generally cannot work at all. This one difference determines your path: with an SSN, you apply like any primary visa holder building credit from a thin file; without one, you're on the ITIN-or-passport path covered on the no-SSN pages. Check your own EAD status first — it's the fact that decides everything else here.
What to have ready
- Your EAD, if you have work authorization (points to the SSN path)
- ITIN or passport, if you don't have work authorization
- Proof of U.S. address
- A security deposit, if starting with a secured card

Info OnlyFrequently Asked Questions
Can I get a credit card on an H-4 or L-2 visa?
Yes. With work authorization and an SSN, you apply like a primary visa holder. Without one, you can still apply using an ITIN or passport at issuers that accept them.
Can an F-2 dependent get a credit card?
F-2 dependents generally can't work, so an SSN usually isn't available. An ITIN or passport-based card is the realistic path — the same as covered on the no-SSN and ITIN pages.
